Yeah, it's my birthday... I'm a whole number older again . Violetice made my day with an upgrade to a Premium Membership!!!
For those wondering, here's the latest in my sketchbook:
Pen & watercolor wash on 4x6" Aquabee (90 lbs.) paper. Red-breasted nuthatch reference photo by Dave Slaughter... part of a monthly pen & ink forum challenge at wetcanvas.com. It's not really *quite* this red IRL, but I'm too lazy to re-scan... or do anything more with the background. Mostly transparent red oxide PR101 & cobalt blue PB28, with a little cerulean chromium PB36:1 + quinacridone gold PO49 thrown in. Prismacolor Premier 0.05mm for the black.
Have a great day, all -- enjoy your sketching/painting/creating!

Still alive :)
Hey folks, thanks for the crazy activity (comments, favorites, etc.) while I've been lapsing on my dA visits... real life and all, plus trying to do some actual art these past weeks! I'll try to get some more useful watercolor stuff uploaded soon ;)
Watercolor progress
I've certainly been having fun with watercolors this past week... but it's time to force myself to do something non-abstract. Eek!
Unfortunately, I was feeling too ill this morning to drive to the paint-out, so I decided the front porch was a good enough location to practice. Picked a few ripe hot peppers (habanero, hot lemon, super chili) and made a quick sketch. Turned out a little shaky, given how I was feeling! Laid some color down, cleaned up some lines, dropped my brush while painting one of the stems (oops). I took several breaks, so the lighting source ended up nearly overhead by the time I stopped for lunch. This could make things a
Watercolor sketchbook practice
My current limited watercolor palette has 7 colors. Not shown above: transparent red oxide PR101, cerulean blue PB36:1, diarylide yellow PY83. Maybe 2-3 more colors I might consider adding for fun, someday. Feel free to make a couple suggestions if you have some favorite lightfast pigments!
I'll be making a better mix chart soon for reference; I accidentally inked over an erased pencil line that wasn't supposed to be there. Whoops. I've been having fun seeing what I can do with these colors and a #2 water reservoir brush in a 3.5x5" sketchbook. Sure makes for some easy travel painting!
Fun with mixes and washes and textures, using all 7 col
First Paint-Out
Good news, I got a couple tubes of watercolor paints after a visit to Wet Paint yesterday! Yay for awesome timing of early birthday presents.
I had the pleasure to join several members of the Northstar Watermedia Society this morning for an open-to-everyone paint-out (plein air gathering) in Stillwater. I spent nearly half the time watching some of the regular participants as they filled their sketchbooks with colorful city scenes. Fortunately, all seemed quite willing to answer my questions and share a bunch of information, all while painting/drawing. Definitely some really talented artists, and a variety of techniques, too! I'm hoping to
